The teaching model presented in Ghana represents a work in progress. Each future location will require innovative thinking and flexible adaptation. We believe that the working design of #1 site visit, #2 formal seminars by expense supported "experts" and #3 repeated volunteer visits for re-assessment and mentoring is a realistic formula for success.
It is appreciated that economic restraints and the availability of volunteer "teams" will determine the realities of interventions. Certainly there are opportunities for solo interventions by qualified volunteers. We are encouraged by the recent response given to volunteers in each of the established AAWC Global Allowance sites. In Ghana, for example, we were informed that both university teaching hospitals were making plans for establishing out-patient wound-lymphedema clinics. Ghana is looking forward to extending a warm welcome for future teaching volunteers. As a result of this teaching visit to Ghana, we have now established the Korle Bu University Teaching Hospital, in Accra, Ghana as an official site for AAWC Global Alliance / Health Volunteers Overseas Volunteers. Arrangements for local "Champion" advisors and lodging accommodations have been completed. We intend to offer Ghana as an active site for volunteer visits at the next SAWC convention in Dallas in April 2009.
It is important to understand that the GIWLC vision is to integrate the existing AAWC / HVO established volunteer sites. There are two active locations in Cambodia, one each in India, Peru, St Lucia and now Accra, Ghana. It is stressed that these sites are not deemed exclusive to any one organization but are intended to serve as support and models for future, specific NGO directed interventions. We welcome the suggestions of all members of the GIWLC Working group as we continue to support these established and many future sites under the umbrella of the GIWLC.
