Site visit by Hubert Vuagnat, Eric Comte and Pierre Brantus on June 29-July 2, 2009:

  • Visited 3 District hospitals
  • Wound prevalence 6%-12% of all visits
  • Engaging  government officials biggest challenge
  • Wound management not recognized by MOM
  • Absent wound referral system
  • Mobile phones offer great potential

Most of the wounds were posttraumatic (burns, road traffic), abscesses, chronic ulcers, diabetic foot and other tropical. They accounted for 6-12% of all the visits. Basic Wound care was disinfectants, dry gauze,  topical and systemic antibiotics, high resistance rates, no pain control. Modern wound care was very variable. No material, no training.
